How do I know if my Car Tyre Needs a Replacement?
-
Repeated Tyre Punctures
If the diameter of the punctures in your tyre is more than a quarter inch, you must not repair the tyre more than twice. Moreover, if there are two large punctures within 16 inches of one another, the tyre should be replaced rather than repaired. Also, if you experience tyre punctures often, you must examine the tyre's suitability for the terrain and to check for any structural or manufacturing issues.
-
Coin Test
Insert a coin in the deepest groove of the tyre. If the top of the coin's head is visible, the tyre has less than 2/32 inches of tread, and the tyre needs to be replaced. If the top of the head is covered and not visible, your car tyres are safe to use and do not need to be replaced.
-
Flat and Smooth Tyres
Excessively smooth, flat tyres reduce braking distance and are unsafe to drive. You must replace them immediately.
-
Distance Travelled
If your car's tyres are 5-6 years old and you have driven more than 60,000-80,000 kilometres, you should consider replacing them.
When is a Car Tyre Puncture Repairable?
If you notice any of the following signs, you can have your car tyre repaired.
The puncture is not on the sidewall or shoulder
The tyre cut is less than 1/4 inch
The tyre belt should not have broken
However, if you repeatedly experience tyre punctures, consider replacing the tyres.
How do I Find the Right Tyre for my Car?
You must always refer to the car's manual to learn about the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) tyres before replacing them with new ones. OEM tyres are the factory-installed tyres that come with a brand-new vehicle. These are installed after extensive R&D on the tyres, including suspension tuning, speed testing, race-track performance, etc.

Do's and don'ts to Maintain the Health of your Tyres
|
|
|
|
Check tyre pressure regularly (every 2-3 weeks) |
Don't drive your vehicle for longer kilometres with improper pressure |
|
Rotate your tyres every six months (from front to back or side to side) |
Avoid overloading the vehicle, as that creates excessive stress on the tyres, leading to uneven wear and tear |
|
Get the wheel alignment and wheel balancing done regularly |
Do not drive aggressively, such as braking at high speeds, taking turns at high speeds, hitting the potholes at high speeds, etc. |
|
Slow down the vehicle while taking turns and before applying the brakes |
Do not park the vehicle in direct sunlight and avoid exposing tyres to harsh chemicals while cleaning. |
|
Fix the tyre puncture immediately and regularly check for cuts or cracks |
Avoid using the same tyres for more than 5-6 years. |
Why Should you Check Tyre Pressure Regularly?
Car tyre pressure is the amount of air in your car's tyres, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). You must get the tyre pressure checked at least once a month. When the tyre pressure falls more than 10% below the recommended pressure, the tyre uses more fuel and is considered underinflated; when it exceeds the recommended pressure by more than 10%, it is considered overinflated, leading to a bumpy ride and difficulties in vehicle handling. For example, if the recommended tyre pressure is 32 PSI, tyre pressure below 29 PSI is considered underinflated, and above 35 PSI is considered overinflated.
