Granting Transport Permits

Uttar Pradesh RTOs issue national, state, and temporary permits for commercial and transport vehicles, including taxis, passenger buses, goods carriers, and autorickshaws. Every vehicle owner needs these permits to operate within Uttar Pradesh or across state lines.

Vehicle Registration Process in Uttar Pradesh

Here is the full process for registering a car at an RTO in Uttar Pradesh:

• Within 7 days of the delivery date, complete Form 20 and submit it to the nearest RTO.

• Submit the application along with the required documents.

• Pay the registration and tax fees depending on the type of vehicle.

• If your documents and application are verified, RTO will issue you a registration certificate.

Documents Required for Vehicle Registration in Uttar Pradesh

To drive a motor vehicle in UP, you must register it with the UP RTO. For this purpose, you will require the following documents:

• Sale Certificate included in Form 21
• Valid insurance
• Original Sale certificate
• Proof of address
• Roadworthiness certificate
• Temporary registration
• Proof of citizenship
• Custom clearance certificate in case of an ex-army vehicle
• Appropriate fee as specified in rule 81
• Proof of fitment of Fastag specified in Rule 138A
• Proof of legal presence in India, in addition to proof of residence for foreigners

Documents Required for the Transfer of Ownership of a Vehicle

If you want to transfer the ownership of a vehicle, the following documents are needed:

• Form 29 and Form 30
• Registration Certificate Copy
• Road tax payment supporting document proof for business vehicles
• Insurance Policy document
• N.O.C. of the vehicle, if registered outside U.P.
• Pollution Under Control Certificate
• Tax clearance certificate
• Prescribed fee
• Passport-size photograph of the purchaser and seller

Role of RTO in Vehicle Insurance in Uttar Pradesh

Insurance companies always verify RTO records to check whether your vehicle is registered, the jurisdictional RTO, registration location, etc. The RTO updates ownership information when a vehicle is sold or the owner changes, so the new owner receives the correct insurance policy.

RTOs also make sure that all vehicles comply with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Third-party insurance is compulsory. The RTO where your vehicle is registered can also affect your motor insurance premium. Usually, vehicles registered in urban areas are charged higher premiums due to the higher risk of accidents, whereas those registered in smaller towns are charged lower premiums.
